In the times of the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties the main part of the Grand Canal near Liaocheng, in the providence of Shandong, was a waterway supply route. The supply route was used for transporting food stables and supplies needed between the north and the south. The Grand Canal of China is the world's oldest and longest water canal.

The building of the canal began in 486 BC during the time of the Wu Dynasty. The canal is 1,795 kilometers long with 60 bridges crossing its path. It has a fantastic history that anyone traveling China should find immensely attractive. Visiting and Traveling China and seeing its rich heritage is an experience to be had. Many Archeology sites have been found around the water way and restored to their glory. With all these wonderful discoveries the grand Canal is reinventing itself as a favorable place to visit.

The Grand Canal has not been spoiled or damaged from outsiders or neglect. The “Grand Canal” is one of Chinas best but least known destinations. At the very southern end of the Grand Canal, the city of Hangzhou and its people are beginning to rebuild the waterway into an outstanding and up and coming tourist attraction. It is located very close to the well known destination of West Lake. The city government of Hangzhou is planning construction of an alternate route for the transportation that crowds the river now. This will further restore the beauty and grace this Chinese destination has to offer.
